Overview

The Strategy’s aim is to ensure a more healthy and sustainable EU food system which protects the environment whilst simultaneously ensuring that the EU agricultural sector remains competitive and resilient in the wake of climate change.

 

The Commission is proposing:

  • a reduction of 50% in the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 2030
  • a reduction of 50% in the use of hazardous pesticides by 2030
  • a reduction of nutrient losses in the environment by at least 50%
  • a reduction on fertilizer use by at least 20% by 2030
  • a reduction of 50% in the sale of antimicrobials for farmed animals in aquaculture by 2030
  • 25% of total farmland will be encouraged to transition to organic farmland by 2030
European Commission

The Startegy was published by the European Commission in May 2020.  It is expected that the Commission will develop a legislative framework for sustainable food systems later on during its mandate.
