As of September 1, 2020 the EU Regulation on the approval of market surveillance of motor vehicles started to apply in all EU Member States.
Type approval is the process for certifying that a vehicle meets all requirements to be placed on the market and for rigorous checking of manufacturers’ ongoing compliance with EU law.
The new type approval rules were proposed by the Commission in 2016 in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal and adopted in 2018.
The new regulation has three key elements:
- Independence and quality testing before a car is placed on the market;
- Checks on cars on the market;
- European Union oversight.
