European Commission condemns violence during Belarus elections

On August 9, Presidential elections were held in Belarus. Prior to the election, the European Union had repeatedly expressed its expectations on the proper conduct of these elections.

Notwithstanding the concerns that were previously expressed, election night was marred by State violence against peaceful protesters which also resulted in the loss of life of one citizen.

The European Commission condemned the violence and called for the immediate release of all detained during election night. The European Commission went on to state that the Belarusian authorities must ensure that the fundamental rights of peaceful assembly are to be respected at all times.

The European Commission is expecting that the Central Electoral Commission publishes the results reflecting the Belarusian people’s votes.
