COVID-19: European Commission concludes talks with 5th vaccine manufacturer

On August 24, the European Commission concluded exploratory talks with vaccine manufacturer, Moderna, to purchase a potential vaccine against COVID-19.

Moderna, is the 5th manufacturer with which talks have been concluded following, Sanofi-GSK, Johnson & Johnson, CureVac and AstraZeneca.

Proposed contract would, in the eventuality of the production of a vaccine for COVID-19, provide all EU Member States with the opportunity to purchase the vaccine.

It is currently expected that the European Commission will have the framework in place to purchase 80 million doses on behalf of all EU Member States with an option to purchase up to a further 80 million doses, provided that the vaccine is safe and effective against COVID-19.
