PM Joseph Muscat reiterates wider discussion on Europe’s future

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is currently attending a summit in Rome, also known as the ‘Southern Seven’ meeting.

He said that Europe must consult with European citizens on the EU’s future and which should take the form of a wide discussion. He said that this summit is not about a group of countries seeking to detach itself from the EU but that wants to push its ideas forward on various issues.

Dr Muscat also cited an example of the EU Budget, which is currently being discussed in the context of the UK’s exit, since the UK used to contribute around one billion euros. The discussion, he said, is about whether other Member States should make up for these losses or whether the funds will be deducted from the budget, and which sectors should be given priority in terms of funds.
