Float to have European Union theme
The 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union is creating a space for local traditions and local talent. In view of this, it is only natural for the cultural programme to include Maltese carnival. The Presidency has commissioned a carnival float, which will form part of one of the most popular events on our country’s cultural calendar. This February, as part of Carnival week, we are going to see a Carnival float – the result of a collaboration between British caricaturist Steve Bell and local Cicco Carnival company, based on the theme of the European Union. The unique design of the float joins together the Maltese passion for carnival with European identity. This project was carried out in collaboration with Malta Arts Council.
Steve Bell is a caricaturist for Belltoons and The Guardian; his themes focus on sharp reflections of our daily political lives, and he will be collaborating with local carnival float fabricator Norman Hill, in order to design this European Union themed float.
The 2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union carnival float is a commentary on the reality that the EU is currently facing, in connection with recent political developments in Bell's home country. The two artists intend to present the European Union's political reality, including two perspectives, crossing borders, and merging English satire with Maltese creativity, showing that at the end of the day we are all in the same boat.
The colours of Carnival will affirm part of the island’s cultural identity that all Maltese can be proud of, leaving the best possible impression on the other EU Member States. Carnival week runs from the 24th until the 28th of February.
