Horizon 2020 is the European Union’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and is the new financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union. It incorporates all the current research and innovation funding known as: the Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
The Horizon 2020 will be focusing on three different areas, which are: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenge.
Societal challenges programme aims is to tackle the major issues affecting the lives of European citizens through effective research and innovation to respond to key societal challenges. The objectives of this area is to achieve clean and efficient energy, smart, green transport, safe, secure food supply and longer and healthier lives amongst others. Supported activities shall target Health, demographic changes and well-being, Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio based economy amongst others.
