European Year of Citizens 2013

The better the people of Europe are aware and understand their rights as EU citizens, the more they will be able to make full use of these rights in their personal lives.

Decision 1093/2012/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on the European Year of Citizens (2013)

This is the vision for the European Year of Citizens 2013, a year also marked by the 20th anniversary of the concept of EU citizenship, introduced by the Treaty of Maastricht in 1993. EU citizenship gives individuals a number of rights in addition to the rights they exercise as nationals of their country of origin.

The European Year of Citizens 2013 provided an opportunity for people across Europe to:

  • Learn more about the rights and opportunities arising from EU citizenship;
  • Stimulate debate about the obstacles that prevent people from fully exercising these rights and generate specific proposals for addressing them; and
  • Encourage people to participate in civic fora on EU policies and issues.

MEUSAC, as the official National Contact Point in Malta for the European Year of Citizens 2013, played a leading role throughout the Year in disseminating the messages of this European Year through various media, activities and events.

During the Year, MEUSAC worked closely with its partners in the European Commission Representation and the European Parliament Information Office in Malta as well as with other interested stakeholders and civil society to maximise on the opportunities presented by the European Year and to ensure that the objectives of the Year are met in Malta.
